3.5km & 10km Best of the Best Race

Event information

This event has passed.

This Saturday – 20 August – the Best of the Best – the run-off of our monthly trophy winners – for both the 2019-21 and 2021-22 series and both for 3.5k and 10k handicaps.

The monthly trophy winners of the Covid extended series of 2019-21 and the just concluded 2021-22 series will be racing at the same time, in the one event albeit in two separate races.

There are 4 ‘Best of the Best’ trophies up for grabs:
-    the 10k for the 2019-21 series
-    the 3.5k for the 2019-21 series
-    the 10k for the 2021-22 series
-    the 3.5k for the 2021-22 series

We have individuals who have been multiple trophy winners in both the 2019-21 and 2021-22 series and in one or both the 3.5k or 10k distances.

How it will work:

  • if you were a winner in the 2019-21 series for the 3.5k that is the trophy you are vying for. Ditto for the other series and distance.
  • If you were a winner in both distances, you must nominate a distance that you want to contest, either the 3.5k or the 10k. You can advise your choice on Saturday.
  • If you were a winner in the 10k in both series, your Saturday result will be considered as a result in both series … you can be 3rd in one series and 1st in the other, or you can be 1st and 1st. Same for the 3.5k.

For example:
referring to our winners listing -
Peter Brouwer will be competing in 10k for the 2019-21 series.
Ben has 2 wins in 10k of the 2019-21 series; he competes only in that series.
Alain and Siobhan have 3 and 2 wins respectively with wins in the 10k of both series; they will be racing in the two races simultaneously off the same handicap start.
Alain, Siobhan and Grace have wins across both distances and must choose the distance that they will compete.

Rules:

First across the line in each of the 4 events is the winner.

Subject to:

  • NOT BEING PACED - meaning you CANNOT have anyone run/walk with you, and
  • If your handicap has been based on your WALKING the monthly event, then you are expected to WALK, and NOT BREAK INTO RUNNING AT ANY TIME.

Breach of either of these rules may result in disqualification by the handicappers.

There is NO disqualification for ‘breaking’ as in the monthly events. The 2-minute rule of the 10k or the 1-minute rule of the 3.5k DO NOT APPLY in this event.

All competitors will start off handicaps set by the handicappers. The handicaps will be available by Friday afternoon and advised in the club’s normal Friday email.

Everyone will start off the one clock with the intention to bring the competitors of both events home across the mats together.

  • All handicaps in both events will be adjusted / fitted to the one clock accordingly.
  • GO time is still 7:30a.m. The competitors of the 10k will be handicapped to 50 minutes as usual, so the expectation is that all finish at 8:20 a.m.
  • The 3.5k runners will have their handicaps adjusted to give a start time that should see them finish at 8:20 a.m. as well.
  • The real ‘time-of-day’ times will be provided to give an indication when our runners can expect to start.
  • Both events will finish to the line from the same direction, the courses coming together at their final turn. That can provide another race to the line.

Good luck everyone! Run well. Run to win!

Hopefully, our fellow Westies not-competing will have had their run and will be about the finish line at around 8:20 a.m. to see the races end and cheer our champions.
