Handicapper's Report - November 10k Handicap
Conditions NOT conducive to good times
No pbs
No qualified runner breaking handicap
but
49 starters
4 having their 1st run, and
super water station support
When the first starter crossed the mats, the temperature was 23 degrees, and when the bulk of our competitors came home 90 minutes later, the temps were 28. The humidity was high, abetted by the overnight rain. The conditions were not runner friendly and proven when no competitor returned a pb which is a real rarity with our club events, and no qualified runner bettered their handicap. All run times were adversely impacted, and many runners suffered in the humidity and heat. Sam Mudie took the mike during announcements and said it all when she thanked the super volunteers who worked the drink stations.
We had 4 new participants doing their first 10k on this course including Tim Molesworth making a return after near 4 years since his last run; handicap assistant Nathan Mudie, just turned 16 and doing his first club 10k for kicking off training for bigger goals, Colin Price who has just joined the club, and visitor Tanvir Uddin.
The first to hit the finishing mats was Tanvir, a first timer. His estimated time plus a little generosity from the handicapper saw him cross the mats 4 minutes better than handicap. The next to finish was Hollie James running a re-qualifier and finishing 40 seconds over handicap. Good run Hollee.
Next home was our trophy winner, Rafic Awad in a time of 63:36. Rafic last won a handicap in June 2011 so a long while between drinks for him. Today’s achievement was a reward for hanging in, ‘the best at hanging in’ one could definitely say ... his time was 46 seconds slower than last month’s when he crossed the line in 11th place ... A truly hard-fought win in the trying conditions. Congratulations Rafic, great job.
Coming home fast on Rafic and finishing only 7 seconds behind into 2nd was Lorri Di Lucchio in 41:47. Lorri said he had nothing left for the last 200m.
And then in 3rd was Steve Pappas, in 43:34.
Finishing between Lorri and Steve was Nathan Mudie having his first qualifying run in the 10k. Nathan is more often seen as the handicappers’ helper but has plans to do a few longer events in the future so had a crack at his first club 10k, running 49:18. Great effort mate.
Not so far behind was the new ol’boy Tim Molesworth having his first run on this course. His time was a quick 37:55, the best on course in 2018-19. (Last series Will Oh owned the quickest at 37:42. Dave Riches ran the course record in August 2017 at 36:21. No pressure, but there is the target). Welcome back Tim.
Congratulations and thank you to everyone who took part, who helped set-up and clean-up, to our magnificent volunteers on drink stations, and to Davo for chalking up the course, and of course for the great photos. We wouldn’t have an event without all of you.
