Handicapper's Report - March 10k Handicap

  • good conditions for running
  • 7th run in the 2018-19 series
  • 61 starters
  • 4 having their first run in the 10k
  • 112 have started in the 10k this series
  • 17 bettered handicap
  • 9 pbs this go; 3 by qualified runners
  • 19 more runners with their best time in over 6 months
  • and again another Westies event with great member support

Our first three to finish were running qualifiers and all recorded significant pbs on their previous runs. Nathan Tomkins, Peter Clarisse and Nathan Mudie. All great runs. The next to finish was Jack Wedgwood who, unfortunately, became the first qualified runner since July’18 to break handicap by greater than 2 minutes, and in so breaking became ineligible for the trophy. Jack’s time of 41:19 was significantly his best run this series, and a 47 second pb on his best time last July. Congratulations Jack. Great run.

Not far behind was our trophy winner Jacqui Viterale hanging on to beat home a fast finishing Ben Swinfield by 4 seconds, doing his damnedest to hold off an equally determined Lilian Molesworth coming faster and finishing only two seconds away. Jacqui ran 51:01, her best since her pb back in July’17. Ben ran his best time (43:05) since February’18, and Lilian (42:07) since July’18. All ran approximately a minute and a half under handicaps. Great competition. Great efforts. Great results. Congratulations big time.

3 seconds away was Chandra Gurung adding to his pb collection, this go his 47:11 was a 1m34s slice . Chandra was a little miffed at missing the podium given Ben and Lilian caught him very late, and also knowing that he was only 9 seconds away from the trophy. Chandra has finished 2nd in the last two 10ks. Well run mate.

The next 8 finishers all ran either a pb or their best time in over 6 months and finished under handicap. Great running. The run times and the running conditions were the best in many months, and with summer now gone, we can look to continuing better times and close results.

Thank you to those who helped at set-up and afterwards with Chris at the pack-up; to our vital and magnificent volunteers on drink stations: Bert, Martin and Nathan T out-the-back and to Emma and Sophie at the bridge; and to Davo for marking up the course and for the great photos. Thanks to Nathan M. again issuing chips and bibs prior to running himself. Thanks to Rob E always. We just wouldn’t have the successful event without all of you.

And as always, congratulations and thank you to everyone that took part.

And please don’t forget – the water cups we are now using are recyclable and being collected for that purpose.

Another great morning at Westies.

A very special request from the handicappers: Please, please, please ensure that your chips are laced/affixed to your shoes. Last Saturday we had an instance where one of our runners crossed the mats with the chip in his pocket. Chips won’t register unless very close to the mat and especially not in a pocket. The runner, a member, was unaware the chip didn’t register.

We reconcile our start list to the number of chip-reads on the timing box and then again to the number finished. When we are unable to reconcile the numbers, we become concerned that we may have a participant still out on course and we endeavour to work out who we are looking for, hoping that no one has gone down and nothing serious has happened. We don’t start processing the results until we have all accounted for. We delayed last Saturday.

We have a duty of care. Please help us by wearing the chip laced to the shoe, and also, as you do now, please continue to advise us if you withdraw prior to completing the event. Thank you.

Vic.
