Handicapper's Report - May 10k Handicap

  • a milestone morning
  • 9th run in the 2018-19 series of 12
  • 42 starters
  • 2 having their first run in the 10k
  • 14 bettered handicap
  • 11 pbs again this go
  • including another new course record for a junior
  • 5 more runners with their best time since at least the last series
  • now 123 have started in the 10k this series (105 total for 2017-18)
  • now only 3 runners have started in all 9 runs to date
  • and again another Westies event with great member support ... at the water station and the finish line. Fantastic !!!

A great morning to have a run. Conditions were ideal.

Our first four to finish all ran under handicap by more than two minutes. Unfortunately, in bettering that two-minute mark you are not eligible for the trophy.

Kath Dell’Orefice, Lisa Wedgwood, and Trevor Ching were the first to cross the mats, and like last month all three broke their handicaps by significant minutes.

Never has this handicapper in 10 plus years in the role had a qualified runner break handicap by greater than 10 minutes. Great fantastic result for Kath Dell’Orefice. Kath broke 80 minutes for the first time last month, and broke 70 this go, lowering her pb by 10 minutes 31 seconds to 68:56. And this was her 4th straight pb. Keep it going Kath.

Lisa Wedgwood has been having secret training outings with son Jack and lowered her pb by 4 minutes, to 71:03. Lisa also has 4 pb results in the series.

And Trevor Ching broke his handicap by 3m 29s and his 3rd pb in the series.

Great tremendous efforts and results for all of you. Congratulations. Having a purpose or goal for your training boosts the efforts big time. These 3 each have set goals and working so well to achieve them.

The next to cross the line was Ian Forest-Jones, making a comeback qualifying run to the 10k after a 15 month’s absence, when he last ran 58 plus, and this go a 54:43, his best since May’17.

And then came our trophy winner, Zenita Acaba, with her best time since December’16 (65:42). A great way to celebrate a birthday. Zenita won by 2 seconds and was being chased down by Grant Moroney pushing hard right to that line and his best (50:28) since May’17. Coming in 3rd was our spritely walker Ken Mudie, with a 1:49 pb of 71:00, holding off Sue White by 3 seconds, achieving her best since August’17. Included in the next six to also finish under handicap were Jacqui Viterale, our fastest female of the day re-setting her pb time run back in July’17; Lorri Dilucchio with his best in 12 months, and Jack Wedgwood again lowering the Under-16 course record.

All up, 11 pbs, and 5 best times this series.

A lot of great running. What was evident was the great fantastic support and vibe among our members for all participants with the reception at the water station and at that finish line.

Thank you to those who helped at set-up and afterwards with the pack-up. And thank you to our magnificent volunteers on the drink station. Thanks to Davo for again marking up the course and for the great photos. We just wouldn’t have the successful event without people putting their hands up. And as always, congratulations and thank you to everyone that took part.

Another great morning at Westies.

Trivia:

  1. Who said: “I’m going to do the 10k after all. I’d rather run than watch the Giants (in Canberra)! What’s happened to me? ”
  2. Who was running so late that when she arrived she didn’t have time to go to the toilet and miss her start, as has happened. And won?

Vic.
