Anzac Day Challenge

Published Thu 02 May 2019

A handful of Westies hit the trails last Sunday in the 5th Anzac Challenge. The courses include a 40k, 25k and 11k and take in tracks and climbs from other events including the Oxfam Trailwalker and Jabulani Challenge; the 40k starts at Manly Dam and heads to St Ives; the 25k from St Ives to Bobbin Head and back; the 11k about St Ives and the Wildflower Gardens. All courses include steep rough-terrain.

All Westies did well, from our novices, Kath D, Lisa W and Kath M in the 11k (these ladies hadn’t run a 10k handicap 7 months ago) to a trail champ, Zenita, first in category for the second year running. Mark W & Leanne conquered the 40k (in readiness for their 100k in 3 weeks), and Mark didn’t get lost this go. All were on hand when I crossed the finish line, appreciated greatly, albeit I was 2 hours after Jack 😊. We also caught up with x Westie Lisa Bennett, still running well.

This event was initiated five years ago as a fundraiser towards the 100th Anzac Day and the Soldier On charity to support servicemen and women. The organisers wanted out 3 years ago and the Mountain Sports team stepped in to maintain the race and the support for Soldier On. Great work. Great events.
